The Joke Shop Selfridges opened on the 7th March and will be there to bring smile on their customers’ face until 30th March 2024.
The Joke Shop is inspired by Dinsdales, that is believed to be one of England’s oldest joke shops. Dinsdales opened in Hepworth’s arcade in Hull in the 1930s and originally it was a record shop. Following the invention and the growing popularity of radio, the shop owners realised records were no longer selling, so they switched to jokes and tricks instead.
They Thought It was a Joke
Photo: Urban Adventurer
After coming across a BBC article about Dinsdales, a joke shop operating for over 90 years, Selfridges was so impressed that they called the shop to request a visit. Manager Graham Williams initially thought he was pranked.
Selfridges then recreated the façade of Dinsdales joke shop with eye-catchy displays packed with trickster objects, such as itching powder, whoopie cushions and rubber chickens.
“From slapstick to lipstick, good gags and even better bags, practical jokes and impractical fashions, Selfridges explores the surreal, the silly, the odd and the absurd this season.” – Selfridges Oxford Street starts their article on their website.
From Pocket Money Purchases to Designer Products
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The Joke Shop Selfridges is accessible to the whole family from pocket money purchase starting from 99p to tongue-in-cheek pieces from famous designers, such as Anya Hindmarch, Judith Leiber and Puppets and Puppets.
The shop is packed with familiar items from our childhood, like fake poo, fly ice cube, magic candles and wobbly pencil. They also have traffic cone hats, ‘whoop’ biscuits and canned Selfridges air up for grabs along with tons of other tricksters.
Open for Funny Business
Photo: Urban Adventurer
While you there, don’t miss the prank cabinet!
That’s an interactive cabinet allowing visitors to open drawers and get pranked by a squeaking rubber chicken or a Jack-in-the-box or blind touch funny mysterious items, like fake poo and fake bugs. Laughter guaranteed! Just make sure you capture the funny moment with your phone, so you can show it to your friends.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
At the weekends a Joke Shop manager will dress in custom-made uniform to entertain visitors in various ways throughout the day, plus an immersive Manager’s Office will be accessible to Selfridges Unlocked Keyholders.
On your way out, don’t forget to take a joke with you before lifting the handset of one of the joke phones outside the shop to listen to a random joke.
The Joke Shop is open for funny business until the 30th March 2024. No booking required.
Have fun!

🕺🏻 David Bowie fans! You don’t want to miss this! 🎤 [MORE INFO & BLOG POST IN BIO] New photo exhibition opened at The Fitzrovia Chapel, titled: ‘David Bowie – A London Day’ and it’s completely free to visit! #davidbowie#davidbowietiktok#musicicon#davidbowieforever#bowie
On the 13th December 1992, photographer Kevin Davies followed David Bowie during the day, capturing over 450 photos of the music icon who was preparing for the release of his 18th studio album, ‘Black Tie White Noise’.
The pictures were taken to promote the album and at the end of the day Davies asked to capture Bowie “just as you are”.
Bowie then approved a selection of images that were used for promotional purposes and press use. The rest – over 400 – of the photos went to a storage room to stay there until 2020.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
During the COVID_19 lockdown Kevin Davies took the opportunity to re-discover his past jobs and that was the time when he found the perfectly preserved forgotten photographs of the singer.
Now, 20 carefully selected photos are on display at The Fitzrovia Chapel, many of them are those Bowie selected himself to promote his album back in 1992.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
It’s an amazing addition that the photos are displayed at a 19th-century awe-inspiring chapel in the pulsing heart of the city. The Fitzrovia Chapel is a place where people can leave London’s busy streets to find peace and contemplation and admire the glory of the Chapel.
The beautiful Chapel gives an additional meaning to the long-forgotten photos…a single day of an icon, frozen in time, preserved for the eternity.

Each set menu contains a character-inspired main, a drink and a dessert.
Highlights of the menus:
‘Gourmet King Ramen’ is based on the main character, The Protagonist. It’s a 12hrs tonkotsu based pork broth ramen with garlic oil and fried garlic, topped with menma bamboo shoots, BBQ pork belly, spring onion, nitamago egg, kikurage mushrooms, wakame and nori seaweed.
Mitsuru Kirijo’s ‘Execution Noodles’
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The vegan main dish is called ‘Execution Noodles’ and inspired by Mitsuru Kirijo. This is a 1hr miso-based vegetable broth with hosomen thin and straight noodles, topped with spicy piri piri sauce, ganmo tofu, menma bamboo shoots, kikurage mushrooms, tenderstem broccoli and nori seaweed.
Each drink’s colour matches with the character they’re inspired by. The Protagonist’s ‘Balm of Life’ is a Blue Melon Soda, served with raspberry syrup, coconut jelly and maraschino cherry.
Mitsuru Kirijo’s ‘Snuff Soul’ Drink
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Mitsuru’s glowing red drink is called ‘Snuff Soul’ and is a vegan Red Melon Soda with strawberry syrup, coconut jelly and maraschino cherry.
Aigis’ ‘Fountain Dew’ drink is a yellow Melon Soda served with lemon syrup, coconut jelly and maraschino cherry.
Mitsuru Kirijo’s ‘Marin Karin Parfait’
Photo: Urban Adventurer
We chose the vegan Mitsuru Kirijo Set Menu, so we had the ‘Marin Karin Parfait’ as a dessert. It’s a vegan ice cream parfait with anko (sweet red bean paste) garnished with maraschino cherry.
The Protagonist-inspired dessert is called ‘Sweet, Sweet Thanatos’ and is super Instagrammable. It’s a coffin-shaped chocolate mochi brownie served with a scoop of matcha ice cream and strawberry sauce.

If you order one of the set menus, you can order another two character-inspired dishes with discount.
