Ready for your next adventure? Did you know that there is an LGBTQ+ museum in London? Located in Granary Square, Queer Britain is dedicated to celebrating queer history, showcase artworks and tell real stories. One of the highlights of the museum is a hand-written letter by Elton John to his 16-year-old self.
Named after Sir Laurance Oliver, a hidden speakeasy bar, opened last Summer under the National Portrait Gallery. Following a three-year renovation process, the gallery re-opened with a glamorous bar, Larry’s, that cocktail menu takes inspiration from the pictures displayed within the gallery.

Finding Larry’s can be a little bit challenging, given that the bar is situated literally under the National Portrait Gallery.
There is a hidden staircase within the gallery’s ground floor café on Charring Cross Road. Feel free to ask the direction from a member of staff.
Once you’ve found the staircase; it will lead you to a spectacular dim lit vaulted bar with exposed brick walls. Originally the space was built as a coal storage in 1896 but now its brick walls are adorned with a selection of portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Amy Winehouse, Peter O’Toole and Dame Edna Everage.

The bar offers seats for groups as well as more intimate booths for couples who are there for a date. There are also some adorable train-style seats.
The moody lighting and brick vaults provide a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a drink or two, while the sunlit atrium behind the bar brings light and airy ambience.

The venue is just a few minutes walk for Hoxton station, and the storyline starts right as you step into Avora’s London venue, ‘Roscorp Laboratories’.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
After leaving our jackets and bags in a locker, we are guided to the ‘lab’ downstairs to receive our special Avora spacesuits. There are only a limited number of people in a session to make the experience as immersive and enjoyable as possible.
In the lab, we meet the actors: a scientist, a crazy Roscorp army soldier and Jeff, the CEO of Roscorp Laboratories (he welcomes us on the screen).
Photo: Urban Adventurer
After donning our Avora jumpsuit, we receive our first cocktail.
The elixirs come in lab test tubes, and we mix the two ingredients for ourselves. According to the storyline, the elixirs contain a very special ingredient, called ‘luminol’ discovered on Avora. ‘Luminol’ helps us humans to acclimatise before we step through the gateway to the mysterious planet.
As we mix the two elixirs, they create mist and bubbles to make it super TikTokable.
Now, time to enter the mysterious gateway and meet the Avorians…
A New World – Avora
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The gateway teleports us straight to Avora. It’s daytime and we find ourselves in a beautiful mystical woodland with exotic and unique flora.
An Avorian escorts us through the woodland and shows us a lovely ritual they always do on Avora to express friendship.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Here we have plenty of time to sip our next cocktail, make new friends and interact with Avorians and even teach them something from planet Earth.
As day turns to night, the lush magical world lights up in the dark, transforming the landscape into an enchanting bioluminescent forest.
After taking photos and videos, it’s time for our last destination…
An Other-Worldly Experience
Photo: Urban Adventurer
An Avorian guides us to the final destination of our experience. While crossing a bridge, they show us a trick on how to interact with the Avorian environment and what we see is truly magical.
Arriving to the final room, we see bioluminescent trees cascading from the above in blue and purple light, while illuminating rocks surround us all over.
We are guided to a mystical cave where we receive our last cocktail that contains a special ingredient to make it luminous. But beware! That ingredient has a secret! And Avora’s future will depends on that secret…
Now, Avorians need your help to protect their planet. Are you ready to save Avora from human destruction?

The Joke Shop Selfridges opened on the 7th March and will be there to bring smile on their customers’ face until 30th March 2024.
The Joke Shop is inspired by Dinsdales, that is believed to be one of England’s oldest joke shops. Dinsdales opened in Hepworth’s arcade in Hull in the 1930s and originally it was a record shop. Following the invention and the growing popularity of radio, the shop owners realised records were no longer selling, so they switched to jokes and tricks instead.
They Thought It was a Joke

After coming across a BBC article about Dinsdales, a joke shop operating for over 90 years, Selfridges was so impressed that they called the shop to request a visit. Manager Graham Williams initially thought he was pranked.
Selfridges then recreated the façade of Dinsdales joke shop with eye-catchy displays packed with trickster objects, such as itching powder, whoopie cushions and rubber chickens.
“From slapstick to lipstick, good gags and even better bags, practical jokes and impractical fashions, Selfridges explores the surreal, the silly, the odd and the absurd this season.” – Selfridges Oxford Street starts their article on their website.

The Drinks

Mint Leaf’s signature cocktails are more than just beautifully presented cocktails. They tell stories of Indian history!
We started the night with the ‘Sunderban’ and ‘The Lost Treasure Cocktails’.
‘Sunderban’ was served in a lovely mushroom-shaped glass placed on the top of a mini log, decorated with mini mushrooms, pinecones and lichens. It was a sweet blend of Vodka, peach, pineapple, Grenadine & lemon juice.
Originally Sunderban is the name of a delta formed by rivers in the Bay of Bengal, famous for its magnificent Bengal Tiger you might be familiar with from the famous movie, ‘The Life of Pi’. It’s a very dense forest with lots of secrets and stories to tell.
‘The Lost Treasure’ cocktail was served in a mysterious treasure box as a symbol of the treasures those two ships carried that had belonged to the East India Company. The ships, full of gold, had been sank by a heavy storm on their way back to the UK from India. According to legends, the treasure is still at the bottom of the sea today.
‘The Lost Treasure’ is a perfect balance of Rum, Luxado, caramel syrup & Chambord.

The Menu

The menu at Mind Leaf Lounge is combining authentic, seasonal Indian ingredients, contemporary cooking techniques and stylish presentation.
We started our three-course meal with appetisers: ‘Lamb Seekh Kebab’ and ‘Dahi Papdi Chaat’.
‘Lamb Seekh Kebab’ was skewed lamb mince, expertly spiced and char-grilled to perfection, served with vegetables.
‘Dahi Papdi Chaat’ was a spicy, tangy Indian street food, served with yoghurt and crispy cracker.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
As for the main, we ordered ‘Jackfruit and Spinach Kofta’ which was basically pieces of soft Jackfruit and paneer dumplings in a rich, spiced sauce.
We also tried a special slow cooked a rabbit dish, called ‘Bhuna Khargosh’ which came with spicy Indian gravy.
We had both of the dishes with plain white rice.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
To finish the course, we ordered Mango Mousse and Chocolate Cake. Both were heavenly creamy and flavourful, not too sweet and not heavy.

Pioneer in AI art and technology, Turkish artist Refik Anadol has opened his first solo exhibition at Serpentine North Gallery, ‘Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive’.The immersive exhibition wraps the gallery’s walls in ever-changing AI-generated images inspired by coral reefs and rainforests.
The exhibition showcases Anadol’s expertise in bringing digital art to life to give us new perspective on how we see the connection between human and nature.
“We are using nature as an input for AI to raise awareness of its beauty and complexity. At the moment, AI research is focusing on human reasoning and how to mimic it, but to me, nature needs a different focus that is very different to our logic.” – Anadol says in an interviewwith Designboom.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
‘Artificial Realities: Coral (2023)’ was first unveiled at the World Economic Forum in 2023. This project features coral reefs and underwater scenes using a massive dataset of billions of images of corals – openly accessible online – to create a breath-taking visual experience.
Anadol says in the interview that they “found a way to create ultra-realistic that perhaps can be used as a 3D sculpture or a 3D sense of being underwater that can turn into a living ecosystem.”
In the exhibition, AI generates endless variety of abstract coral images, visual and colour combinations based on the enormous data base it has access to.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Another part of the exhibition is ‘Living Achieve: Large Nature Model’ has premiered earlier this year at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
This project has been adapted specifically for Serpentine North Gallery and showcasing AI images inspired by extensive data of flora, fungi, and fauna form over 16 rainforests across the globe.
‘Artificial Realities: Rainforest’ is also a recent project, showcasing shape-shifting exotic birds. This project marks the longest continuous generative AI visualisation on nature that has ever created.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Anadol’s studio travelled across the globe to understand what it means to live in a rainforest. During their journey they formed a very close relationship with an indigenous family living in Amazonia. As the studio travelled, they were collecting not just images, but also sounds and climate information. As a result, the AI model they’re using now has half billion data points dedicated to Amazonia.
“We have a responsibility as a studio to not just offer beautiful virtual worlds with AI and art, but to highlight that we have something incredibly important that we perhaps lost and find a new way to connect with nature through technology.” – says Anadol.
