Here for the Drama – Who was Mrs Riot?
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Mrs Riot’s real name was Catherine ‘Kitty’ Clive and she was a top stage star in London in the 18th century. She dominated the spoken and musical comedy, and she created a new form of British playhouse entertainment. She was a rebel, a feminist, and a role model in the Georgian period. She was the most lucrative, vivacious, and – often times – vulgar icon of the 1700s.
Mrs Riot was one of Kitty Clive’s famous roles. That’s where the cocktail bar has been given its name after.
