Harvey Nichols have partnered with ‘The World of Tim Burton’ exhibition at the Design Museum to celebrate gothic elegance and festive cheer with exclusive window display and a themed afternoon tea.
Harvey Nichols’ Knightsbridge store is famous for their whimsical festive window displays.
This year, in partnership with the Design Museum, they launched a curious red and black window display showcasing the world-famous director’s sculptures borrowed from Burton’s personal collection.

Harvey Nichols have transformed the traditional afternoon tea into an eerie yet playful celebration of the festive season. The Tim Burton-inspired gothic afternoon tea blends Burton’s spooky whimsical wonderland and Christmas magic.

The afternoon tea serves sweet and savoury sandwiches, cakes and snacks, including white Celeriac and Mushroom Soup served with black mushroom gel stripes, mini Chicken Pie with Purple Potato Puree and Roast Beef, Truffle Cheese, Horseradish, Truffle Pecorino Sandwich served with charcoal bread and delicious bites.

For sweets, they serve black Christmas baubles with edible glitter, blood orange curd crémeux & Christmas pudding mousse, tea & biscuit teapot cake filled with Harvey Nichols Breakfast Tea mousse and tea gel, peppermint candy cane macaron and white chocolate cinnamon gingerbread bonbons.
And, of course, the classic homemade raisin and plain scones, served with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam.
The afternoon tea comes with tea or coffee of your choice. Alternatively, you can opt for a glass of Champagne (that’s extra charge).
The afternoon tea is available until the 28th December 2024 at Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge and OXO Tower.

‘The World of Tim Burton’ exhibition has been touring for a decade and now it reached its final destination, London.
The exhibition showcases over 600 items from the director’s personal archives as well as artworks and movie props used in ‘Beetlejuice’, ‘The Corpse Bride’, ‘Wednesday’ and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, just to name a few.

The exhibition starts with Burton’s childhood in Burbank, California, a suburban American neighbourhood, he called “Anywhere, USA” in an interview.
Young Tim Burton has become interested in horror and science fiction from an early age that fuelled his artistic style over the decades.
At age nine, he asked his mother to make him a skeleton Halloween outfit that later inspired Jack Skellington, the protagonist of cultic stop motion animation film: ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’.
The exhibition showcases Burton’s early works that eventually have never been used because they halted at various stages of the projects.
There is an original letter, the 18-year-old Tim Burton sent to Disney with one of his projects, called ‘The Giant Zlig’. The response letter came from Jeanette Kroger, Editor of Walt Disney productions is also on display. In the letter, the editor rejects Burton’s work, but includes some positive feedback regarding the story and the art and finishes the letter saying “keep up the good work, and good luck”.

There is also a recreation of Burton’s studio which gives visitors a glimpse into his working process.
If you take a closer look to the wall, you will spot some illustrations and drawings from recent projects, such as ‘Wednesday’ he produced during the Covid_19 pandemic.
Sketchbooks, Movie Props and Costumes

The exhibition continues with a selection of 14 sketchbooks containing a wide variety of drawings and the most different character ideas.
On the walls, there are original drawings of the most famous scenes from ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, character sketches of ‘The Corpse Bride’ and ‘Fankenweenie’, and a series of drawings drawn on napkins.

Original puppets used in ‘The Corpse Bride’, ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and ‘Frankenweenie’ are also on display. You can meet face to face with Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie, Victoria Everglot, Emily the Corpse Bride and Victor Van Dort, among many other well-known characters.

The next room is probably the most fascinating for movie fans.
Here, original costumes and movie props are on display, including Edward Scissorhands’ outfit and scissors worn by Johnny Depp, Katrina Van Tassel’s black-and-white striped dress, worn by Christina Ricci, and the Headless Horseman’s costume worn by Christopher Walken.

Twist and Turn

A long neon lit corridor leads visitors to the next exhibition room.
The corridor is twisted and turned, just like the scenes and characters in a Tim Burton film.

Tim Burton depicts physical reality as it is personally felt, not as it appears, distorting perspective and the human figure itself. His drawings, paintings, and sculptures often reflect the director’s childhood belief that he was a ‘misunderstood outcast.’

During your journey in the twisted corridor, you will encounter with giant sculptures and paintings before coming across an eerie Gothic merry-go-round in the final room.

The final exhibition room showcases Burton’s various other projects, including music videos, photography and illustrated books, such as ‘The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories’ (1997)
The characters of the above projects are now on display at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge.
The centre stage of the display is the five sculptures from ‘The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories’ that have been borrowed from Burton’s personal collection.
As part of the collaboration, Harvey Nichols is offering Tim Burton-themed afternoon tea until the 28th December 2024.

Exclusive Sculptures from Burton’s Private Collection

The characters are from ‘The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories’ and the sculptures are eerie yet playful additions to the whimsical festive display.

The luxury retailer have created a Tim Burton-themed afternoon tea the on the 5th floor of the store (the afternoon tea is also available at the OXO Tower Restaurant and in Bristol)
The afternoon tea costs £40 pp or £50 pp with a glass of Champagne and is running from 4th November until 28th December.

If you missed Dumbo while it was in cinemas, here’s your chance to get your physical copy. Dumbo was released in DVD and Blue-ray on June 25, 2019. (I still remember when I saw the Disney cartoon first time as a little girl. I remember how it made me cry. Did you cry on it too?)
The adorable little elephant’s touching story was re-dreamed and re-created by Tim Burton, who is famous for his unusual, gothic fantasy films such as Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Dumbo’s live-action remake has an impressive line-up. Such Hollywood A-listers like Eva Green, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton and Colin Farrell appear in the movie as main characters. Most of whom attended to the film’s European premiere in March in London.
Dumbo’s European Premiere was Taken Place in London
Dumbo’s European premiere was taken place on 29th March 2019 at Curzon cinema, London.
I think I can say without hesitation that Dumbo’s premiere was one of the most beautiful I have seen since I’ve visit movie premieres regularly. The street in front of Curzon turned to a 1920s circus with colourful light bulbs, red and white stripped carpet and a gorgeous themed wall, in front of which the movie stars were being photographed.
Apart from Michael Keaton, all the cast attended to the premiere. I personally wanted to meet Tim Burton and Danny DeVito the most, and I got what I wanted.
I earned a very good place behind the barriers thanks to my early start in the morning. I mean, very early. I arrived at the cinema by 5am (!) which means I had got up at 3:30am that morning.
The Cast – Tim Burton, Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell and Eva Green
Director Tim Burton was announced first, followed by Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito and Eva Green. Tim Burton signed a lot for his fans. He even took two rounds just to make sure he signed for everyone. It seemed to me he was enjoying the premiere very much (click here to watch videos); he and Colin Farrell had a lot of fan together.
How Colin Farrell ‘Ruined’ My Tim Burton Photo
Well, what happened was, I was chasing Tim Burton to get signed photo of him in my hands, when Colin Farrell suddenly appeared in front of me and just signed my Tim Burton photo. At that moment Tim Burton turned back because he knew he had missed my photo, so he wanted to sign it. Then, he saw the photo had already been signed. Colin told Tim Burton he had just sign it instead of him and busted out laughing. Of course, after this Tim didn’t want to sign it. Meh…
So, on this photo of Tim Burton you can see Colin Farrell’s signature. Thanks Colin… (haha)
After all, miraculously I was managed to get an autograph from Tim Burton too on this photo.
Danny DeVito
Danny DeVito was simply adorable. He really took the stars from the sky for his fans. He went step-by-step and signed everything for everybody taking his time for every signature.
That’s the signature I am the most proud of from Dumbo premiere.
Actually, Danny DeVito looked a bit lost on the red carpet. Unlike other members of the cast, he had to be guided from one interviewer to the other, his assistant had to chase him constantly because sometimes he just disappeared in the crowd. I saw his assistant running after him a couple of times and turning him to the opposite direction.
Meanwhile, Colin Farrell was jumping and joking all around the red carpet, he even trolled into Danny DeVito’s interviews a couple of times.
Eva Green
Eva Green arrived in a stylish green dress. She looked and acted like a diva on the carpet. She was shining. She was very friendly (I surprised how friendly and approachable she actually was), she gave lots of autographs and took many selfies with her fans.
I think this was the movie premiere I collected signatures from almost everyone: Tim Burton, Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Eva Green and many other cast members.
The Final Photo Shoot of the Cast
At the end of the premiere I was lucky enough to witness the final photo shoot on the red carpet. It was happening right in front of me, so I even took a selfie video with the whole cast. Yippee!
