Waxy O’Connor’s is London’s biggest Irish pub. It’s a labyrinth of four unique bars over six levels, all linked together by a warren of staircases, hidden corners, and alleys.
[BLOG POST IN BIO] This pub looks like it was stright from The Lord of the Rings 🏰👁️🔥💍 🍺 The pub’s name is Waxy O’Connor’s and it’s a labyrinth of four unique bars over six levels, all linked together by a warren of staircases, hidden corners, and alleys 🕯️ It’s named after a real person. Finbar O’Connor was a famous Irish candlemaker born in 1788 in Dublin, hence the name In the centre of the pub stands a 250-year-old Irish Beech tree 🏰 The four different bars provide four different atmospheres. At Waxy O’Connor’s you might get lost…in the best way!
Located in the very heart of Soho, Waxy O’Connor’s is actually four different bars under one roof. The pub spans six levels, connected by narrow alleyways, mystical wooden staircases that lead you all directions and hidden corners to explore.

A 250-Year-Old Irish Beech Tree in the Centre
Photo: Urban Adventurer
In the centre of Waxy O’Connor’s stands a 250-year-old Irish Beech tree.
The tree was planted 2.5 centuries ago in Midlands Ireland and died naturally in 1994. The tree was shipped to London the following year to be ‘planted’ in the centre of Waxy O’Connor’s. A local woodworker who had played under the tree as a child helped hew and treat the tree.
Since then, the tree has stood tall and proud in the middle of the pub. Guests love sitting under its branches enjoying a pint or two discussing, sport, the weather or other important subjects.
Named After a Real Person
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Waxy O’Connor’s was named after a real person. A famous Dublin candlemaker, Finbar O’Connor was born in 1788 and – following his father’s footsteps – became a candlemaker at the age of 16.
His candles were legendary, just like his appetite and thirst. O’Connor, who was a big man, soon became known as ‘Waxy’ and gained fame for not just his candles but his incredible capacity for hard liquor and his ability to consume a lot of beer and whisky.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The excuse for consuming such an amazing amount of liqueur was the fact that candlemakers at that time had to work in extreme heat that stole their bodily liquids and drain their energy.
Waxy O’Connor allegedly was once heard to say:“Such heat doth parch a man and a parched man is a barren man – Beer is the only cure – us lads could put away gallons in a day”.
Great Bar Menu
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Waxy O’Connor’s has an amazing bar menu, even Waxy himself would lick his fingers after tasting.
Big plates for friend groups, such as ‘Waxy’s Fry’ (Cumberland sausage, bacon, black pudding, white pudding, potato scone, tomato, mushroom, baked beans, poached egg and toast & butter), small plates, sharers and burgers & sides are all on the menu, ready to satisfy your tastebuds.
Sunday roasts and buffet menu, including bruschetta, wraps, waffle fries and croquettes are also available.
The pub is specialised in Irish whiskey, craft beers and the best Guinness in London.
The Best Place to Celebrate St. Patric’s Day or Watch Sport
Photo: Urban Adventurer
What could be a better spot to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day in London than the capital’s biggest Irish pub? It has the perfect atmosphere, the friendliest bartenders and the best people to meet and make new friendships with.
Waxy O’Connor’s is also a go-to spot for sport lovers.
There are eight big screens for major sporting events, so no matter where you’re at within the pub, you won’t miss the best moments.
Plus, there’s live music seven nights a week.
If you’re looking for a truly unique pub in London, Waxy O’Connor’s is definitely a must-visit. Book for drinks, dinner or simply walk in.

Photo: Urban Adventurer
‘Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds: The Immersive Experience’ has been all set to Jeff Wayne’s iconic music. Jeff Wayne is the composer who created the music for the musical version of The War of the Worlds, inspired by H.G. Wells’ dystopian sci-fi novel, originally published in 1898.
The composer not only remastered his iconic music for this immersive experience, but he has also overseen other aspects of the experience, including script, costumes, VR, sets, sound design, lighting and even the exclusive merchandise!

From the creators of Avora and Moonshine Saloon, Alcotraz is one of London’s best immersive theatrical cocktail experiences.
The Story
Photo: Urban Adventurer
If you’ve previously visited Moonshine Saloon, you know the story of the notorious moonshiner and bootlegger, Clyde Cassidy and his gang.
Cassidy has built his liqueur smuggling empire that, despite of the police constantly chasing him, he’s been running successfully for decades. Cassidy’s Moonshine Saloon is where outlaws do business with the locals and sell drinks. One day the Sheriff is in town and sniffs suspicion…
Alcotraz picks the storyline up where it dropped at Moonshine Saloon. Clyde Cassidy has finally been caught and put behind bars for life in America’s newest and most feared prison, Alcotraz Penitentiary.
However, even Alcotraz cannot stop Cassidy and his liqueur smuggling empire. He managed to turn the guards crooked to help him newly convicted inmates smuggle in their own liqueur.
Inspired by Hollywood Film & TV
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Alcotraz prison cocktail bar is inspired by Hollywood Film and TV productions that brought popular prison stories to life.
Alcotraz is more than just an immersive cocktail experience.
Here guests put on orange jumpsuits, walk through a metal detector and become inmates of an evening.
You have to smuggle your own liquor that notorious bootleggers will turn into delicious cocktails. The Guards of Alcotraz are all crooked, so they will do their best to help you smuggle in your bottle.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Once you’re in your jumpsuit you will be escorted into your very own prison cell where the theatrical experience really begins.
A group of talented actors bring an exciting story to life right in front of your eyes with lots of drama and laughter. You will meet a member of the Cassidy Gang, visit the Warden’s office, take a mug shot and – of course – enjoy delicious cocktails made from the liquor you previously smuggled in.
You will enjoy four different cocktails during your visit. However, there’s no menu here….it’s a prison after all, right? So, what cocktails will get?
When handing over your bottle you will be asked what types of cocktails you like. Do you like it sweet, smoky, spicy or fruity? However you like your cocktails, they will blend you four bespoke creations entirely tailored to your taste.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
All other ingredients, such as syrups, bitters and fruits are provided by the mixers. The bartenders typically don’t use all the liquor you had smuggled in, so you will get back the leftovers to take home with you.
We brought a bottle of Martini and requested our cocktails to be sweet. All four cocktails were totally different and very delicious.
The cocktails are not strong at all, so they are perfect to help you get in good spirit but won’t make you drunk, not even tipsy.
Don’t drink alcohol? No problem!
Photo: Urban Adventurer
If you don’t drink alcohol but would love to do the Alcotraz experience, don’t worry. In this case, you don’t have to bring anything with you. Simply mention this to the staff and the bartenders will create four mocktails for you instead.
Choose Your Sentence
Photo: Urban Adventurer
There are three different ticket types with or without add-ons and souvenirs to take home.
‘The Rookie’ ticket consists of the basic experience with four bespoke cocktails.
‘The Associate’ ticket consists of the theatrical experience with four cocktails and a Prison Record Card souvenir to take home with your own photo to commemorate your visit.
‘The Boss’ ticket consists of the theatrical experience with four cocktails, plus canteen sweets and a branded Alcotraz mug to take home.

Kitsch Living Room Bar with Quirky Cocktails – Little Nan’s Bar
Photo: Urban Adventurer
I think, we can confidently say that Little Nan’s Bar is one of London’s quirkiest bars.
The bar was set up in honour of the founder’s – Tristan Scutt, referring himself as Grandson Tristan – beloved late grandmother (hence the name) who passed away at the age of 103 (!).
The bar is filled with her eclectic furniture and ornaments, turning the place into a cosy kitsch living room.

To make sure you fully soak into the Little Nan’s experience, they offer prop boxes full of free-to-wear wigs, hats, funny masks and glasses.
The Menu
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Little Nan’s Bar has the craziest menu ever! It contains over 100 (!) cocktails and hand-written by Grandson Tristan.
To add the quirkiness, many of the cocktails are named after loyal regular customers, Nan’s favourite celebrities, and soap stars, including Queen Pat Butcher (actress Pam St Clement who played Pat Butcher in EastEnders has actually visited the bar).

If this is not enough, if you visit Little Nan’s Bar on your birthday, they will name a cocktail in your honour!

Little Nan’s Bar 2.0 recently opened their private hire room, called Aunties Ballroom. The Ballroom is located right next to the bar and can accommodate up to 90 guests or up to 75 seated guests for shows or gigs.
And here’s the twist you will not believe: Aunties Ballroom has been designed by an Oscar winning artist!

That’s right! Grandson Matt designed and made all the fabric you can see inside Aunties Ballroom, along with the light up signs, the disco anchor and the Giant Nan’s face curtain at the entrance of the bar.

About Little Nan’s Bar
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Located under the railway arches just a few minutes walk from Deptford station, Little Nan’s Bar 2.0 is the sister bar of Little Nan’s which is right next to the station.
Little Nan’s Bar is a multi award winning (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to see all the awards they have received over the years) bar, first launched in 2013, however, forced to close the following year.
The next three years they travelled across London doing pop-ups which were huge success before finally returning to Deptford and settling in a vacant arch in Deptford Market Yard.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
In 2024, they almost closed again (due to some landlord drama), so they launched Little Nan’s Bar 2.0, just 5-minutes walk from the original bar. Soon, however, the landlord asked them to stay, so here they are with two venues just a few minutes walking distance between one another.
In 2024, they also opened their new whimsical Air BnB holiday home in Weymouth: Little Nan’s Weymouth Holiday Home which was a roaring success. Little Nan’s Weymouth Holiday Home was featured in The Sunday Times as the “UK’s Most OTT Air BnB” as well as in numerous other magazines, and Tristan, the founder, even gave interview to BBC Radio.
If you’re constantly on the hunt for your next adventure in London, love exploring secret places only locals know about or looking for the perfect venue to hire for your event, Little Nan’s Bar could definitely be a choice!
Plus, open on days when events are on. For more info, keep an eye on their website and social media.
