The History of The Sherlock Holmes Pub

The building was built in 1736 and was operating as a lodging house before it later became a hotel, called Northumberland Hotel.

This was the hotel Sir Arthur Conan Doyle most likely featured in his 1901 novel: The Hound of the Baskervilles.

The building was refurbished by Whitbread and Co. in 1957 and The Sherlock Holmes Pub is currently under management of Greene King, which is a large pub retailer and brewer. It was founded in 1799 and today managing over 2,700 pubs, restaurant, and hotels across the UK.

In 1957 Whitbread and Co. opened the largest and the most important Sherlock Holmes related exhibition. Thanks to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate and the family’s generous support, Whitbread created a historical recreation of the famous detective’s sitting room and study.

This exhibition was the largest one dedicated to Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, featuring an amazing amount of memorabilia. The room is still there today and free to visit, however, visitors are not allowed to enter the room. They can only peek through the large glass windows.

The room – among many others – displays Holme’s Stradivarius violin, Watson’s revolver, swords, framed pictures and much more.

The walls throughout the pub downstairs and the dining area upstairs, are all decorated with portraits, framed pictures and photographs of all actors ever portrayed Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson throughout the decades.

The Pub

The Sherlock Holmes Pub is relatively far from the detective’s famous home address 221B Baker Street, however there is a good reason why.

The pub is located in Charing Cross which is very close to numerous locations Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described in his novels. For example, The Turkish Bath that Holmes and Watson frequently visited is just next door to the pub. Scotland Yard was also just a few minutes away from the pub as well as River Themes.

 The Menu

To remain loyal to its amazing heritage, The Sherlock Holmes Pub is very English-inspired and very traditional when it comes to food and drink.

For example, Fish and Chips, Butter Pudding and Steak & Ale Pie are on the menu, just to name a few. As for the drinks, you can have house produced speciality ales named after the famous detective and his devoted friend and associate.

There are plenty of other ales, lagers, and ciders as well as spirits, wine and even cocktails to choose from.

The Sherlock Holmes Pub is a one of the most famous tourist attractions in London. It’s usually very busy, especially at the weekends and Friday nights. You can often see tourists (and locals alike) dotted around the pub, taking photos.

The Sherlock Holmes Pub is family and dog friendly!
