Visit Six Legendary Sets from Winterfell to Dragonstone
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Game of Thrones Studio Tours invites you behind the scenes and guides you through six iconic sets containing original props and costumes used during filming and worn by your favourite actors.
The studio tour is located in Banbridge, Northern Ireland (30-minutes from Belfast) at a former linen mill factory which was operating there during the 1900s.
After the linen factory had moved, the site became a filming studio. The studio stretches at 10,000 sq ft and now home to Game of Thrones Studio Tour that reveals all the secrets behind the scenes of the iconic series from the earliest concepts, sketches, costume designs, and maquettes to the final versions we actually see in the film.
Winterfell
“We know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark.”
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Step into Winterfell, the ancestral home of the House of Stark in the North. Wander amongst the stone walls of the Great Hall and marvel at the original set where the GOT cast and crew filmed dramatic scenes, such as Sansa’s coronation or the famous scene where Little Finger met his faith by the hands of Arya Stark.
The Great Hall of Winterfell remained as it was originally built for filming. You can stand at exact the same spot your favourite actors stood and recreate the most iconic moments.
Statue of Lyanna Stark
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Explore the Stark’s crypt and stand face to face with the statue of Lyanna and Ned Stark or take selfie with the stone carved Jon Snow, Arya and Sansa Stark.
Castle Black
“Now my watch begins.”
Costumes worn by Kit Harrington and John Bradley
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Join the Night’s Watch and guard the realm against the deadly dangers lurking behind the Wall.
Feel the power of brotherhood while admiring original costumes worn by Kit Harrington (Jon Snow), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) and Carice van Houten (the Red Woman).
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Recall the heartbreaking scene when Jon Snow was murdered by his own men and then miraculously brought back to life by the Red Woman.
Beyond the Wall
“Winter is coming. We know what’s coming with it.”
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Embark on a spine shivering journey behind the Wall, meet giants, encounter the Wildings and look into the icy blue eyes of the Night King. Allow time for yourself to read the information boards because you will learn mind-blowing facts.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Did you know, for example, that Wun-Wun the giant wasn’t entirely CGI? He was actually played by a real actor.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
“Hold the door!” and witness the gentle giant, Hodor, sacrificing himself for Bren Stark and his friends.
King’s Landing
“Everyone who isn’t us is an enemy.”
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Visit the original sets of King’s Landing. Witness Cersei and Jamie Lannister standing among the rigid columns of the map hall.
Study the original Game of Thrones map painted on the floor. Spot Winterfell, the Narrow Sea, Dorn in the South and the dreadful North where only a handful of Night’s Watch remained to protect the South from the Night King and his living dead army.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Witness the Small Council Chamber in the Red Keep where the King or Queen and monarch of the Seven Kingdoms discussed matters, strategy and tactics.
Are you brave enough to stand in front of Ser Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, Cersei’s zombie bodyguard?
Dragonstone
“I will take what is mine with fire and blood.”
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Step into Dragonstone, the ancestral home of the Targaryen. Stand before the throne, the Targaryens ruled the world and The Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen sat while spending her time at Dragonstone planning her next moves.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Admire a giant dragon skull and the Map Table and marvel at the intricate costumes, the impressive chandeliers and other props used in the series. Watch interviews with the designers and learn the intricate process of costume making and jaw-dropping behind-the-scenes facts.
Destroyed Throne Room
“The Iron Throne go to the man who has the strength to seize it.”
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Recall the heartbreaking moment when Jon Snow chose to kill Deanerys as you standing in front of the imposing Iron Throne in the destroyed Throne Room.
Can you feel the irresistible desire to sit on it and rule the Seven Kingdoms?
Well, you can actually sit on the Iron Throne!
Not the original one, of course, but you can claim the exact same replica throne in front of a green screen. Don a robe, imagine you rule the Seven Kingdoms for a few seconds and take home an epic photo of you as a King or Queen of Westeros.
From Sketch to the Final Cut – Costume Design and Production Design of Game of Thrones
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Now you have visited all the iconic sets of Game of Thrones, looked into the eyes of the Night King and sat on the Iron Throne.
Your journey, however, is yet to be over!
The second part of the studio tour is all about bringing the magic to life.
Maquette of the Hall of Faces
Photo: Urban Adventurer
You can see never-before-seen early sketches, maquettes, and designs. Every set, prop, sigil, wall flag and furniture you see in the series had to be designed, prototyped and created by the talented team of artists and designers of Game of Thrones.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
All intricate details of the costumes were meticulously designed by artists led by award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton. Think of the militaristic style of Cersei’s coronation gown, or Daenerys Targaryen’s dramatic white fur coat.
Follow the development of designs from the earliest sketches to the final cut.
Special & Visual Effects
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The magic of Game of Thrones could have never happened without the Special Effect and Visual Effect team.
Deanerys’ dragons: Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion and other breath-taking scenes, such as the Wall were created with cutting edge technology. Many of those scenes were filmed in front of a green screen before the special effect and visual effect team brought them to life.
It means, the actors and actresses had to rely on their imagination. All they had were a few reference marks on the walls and the ground to help them navigate as they were acting.
Prosthetics & Makeup
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The prosthetic and makeup department spent tremendous amount of time to create other-worldly masks based of the actors’ faces.
First, they had to make a silicon mould of the actors’ faces, then they started building the incredibly lifelike masks and prosthetics to transform the actors into mythical creatures.
Watch the painstakingly long and intricate process of creating masks. Many of the actors and actresses had to sit on the makeup chair for long hours waiting for their masks and makeup to be applied and get ready for filming.
Props & Weapons
Photo: Urban Adventurer
The Studio Tour’s Armory Department features thousands of custom-made props and weapons, including the Catspaw Dagger Arya killed the Night King with, The Oathkeeper and Joffery’s crossbow.
The Scorpio
Photo: Urban Adventurer
You can walk around The Scorpio, the ultimate dragon killing crossbow that killed one of Daenerys’ dragons.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
Intricate jewellery pieces Cersei, the Red Woman, and other actors and actresses worn in the show, dragon eggs and lots of other props are also on display.
Interactive Photo Ops
Photo: Urban Adventurer
There are lots of fun activities and photo ops during your journey.
Take a photo with an archery bow while eliminating undead, sit on the Iron Throne, or become a member of the Kingsguard. You can even virtually try on the Night King’s mask and witness the process of creating CGI characters.
Photo: Urban Adventurer
You can even scan your face and display it on one of the huge columns in the Hall of Faces.
