If you were a kid in the 1980s and 1990s, you probably remember Looney Tunes classics, such as Coyote and the Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig.

Artist Priest is known for his playful and satiric paintings, inspired by legendary cartoon characters and their fictional worlds. Priest’s satiric style blends innocent imagery with dark disruptive subject matters.

‘Trapped in a Cel’ is exploring the world of Looney Tunes, where the word ‘cel’ has a double reference. It refers to animation cels that were used to be the tradition method to create animation before digitalisation. As the paintings include many elements of crime and illegal activity (just think of how the Coyote tries to catch the Roadrunner), the word ‘cel’ also refers to jail cell.

The centre of the exhibition is a pile of ‘explosives’, towering over the visitors. The red barrels and wooden boxes look exactly like they just jumped out from Looney Tunes cartoons.

‘Trapped in a Cel’ doesn’t just bring back childhood memories, but also carries plenty of satirical twists and thought-provoking elements. So, make sure you take time to explore the artworks.

Notice, how elements of graffiti are incorporated in the paintings! Graffiti plays pivotal role in Priest’s works. His is currently taking inspirations from the artworks of KAWS, RONE, Joan Cornella, Javier Calleja and Nathan Fielder.
