Named after the ancient Greek and Roman god of the Sun, ‘Helios’ is celebrating the profound impact of our closest star to human history and culture.
Co-commissioned by the Old Royal Naval College, the 7-metre artwork is the most ambitious of Luke Jerram’s monumental installations previously exhibited all around London and the globe: Museum of the Moon, the Mars and Gaia (the Earth).
At a scale of 1:200 million, every centimetre of ‘Helios’ represents 2,000km of the Sun’s surface.
Unlike Luke Jerram’s other installations, visitors can watch ‘Helios’ come to life by sunspots, spicules, and filaments being projected on the surface of the monstrous installation; including the solar activity produced the Northern Lights above the UK in 2024.
To further enhance the experience, specially created surround sound composition helps visitors to immerse into the awe-inspiring sensory journey.
The floating installation is surrounded by one of the most impressive Baroque interiors in Europe further igniting curiosity and encouraging visitors to learn more about the closest star to Earth.
