To get into a movie premiere you always need to get a numbered wristband as only limited people are allowed to be behind the barriers. Although, Covid restrictions have been lifted in the UK, some restrictions are still being hold in movie premieres. This means, lower number of wristbands are given out in order to avoid overcrowded viewing pans and some celebrities do not give out autographs at all to avoid physical contact.

This was the case at Top Gun: Maverick premiere.

Knowing this, despite of the fact that in most of the cases wristbands are given out on the day of the premiere, many fans attended to Leicester Square the night before ready to camp outside. To avoid fans camp outside all night, the security eventually gave out the wristbands that night. This is how I got mine at around 11pm after hours of waiting at the Odeon Lux Cinema.

I don’t know exactly how many wristbands were given out, but there were only 3 or 4 small colour coded viewing pans and fans were allowed to choose which pans they wanted to stand in. I chose the purple one, because that was the closest to the drop off zone, so I could be among the first people to witness the celebrities arriving.

We all went through a very serious security check before being let in the viewing pans. Bag search, metal detector, and bomb-sniffing dogs; all to guarantee the security of the celebrities and the royals attending.

Sadly, us fans were separated from the celebrities by cordons and Tome Cruise and Jennifer Connelly did not sign for anyone at all. (Damn, Covid!) Instead, they greeted us and let us take photos of them. Other cast members and guests didn’t care about the cordons. They just stepped over and signed to us.

A professional photographer was also present to take photos that later he uploaded to the Internet where we could download them using a QR code provided us before the premiere started.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at around 7:30pm. For their safety and security, the red carpet must have been cleared completely before their arriving. Only the security and fans behind the barriers were allowed to stay.

Prince William and Kate finally arrived under police escort. They greeted us and then went to join Tom Cruise and the cast of Top Gun: Maverick.
