On 29th May 1953 Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay and an incredible team of Sherpas who carried twenty (!) tones of equipment on foot for 280 kilometres made history. They conquered the unreachable summit of Everest for the first time.
Everest: The First Ascend has been nominated in the Immersive category at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival 2026.

Climb the World’s Highest Peak

As you put on your VR headset, you’ll find yourself at the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It’s March 1953 and you’re enjoying incredible landscapes as gazing out of the train’s window.
You witness remote villages, tranquil monasteries and beautiful valleys inhabited by yaks. You’ll start to understand the strong spiritual connection between the mountain and its people as you learn more about the Sherpa culture.

Your next stop is the Everest Base Camp. As you climb higher the weather becomes more hostile and there is less oxygen in the air.
You’ll travel trough dangerous terrain, climb vertical icefalls, cross crevasses on suspended ladders and experience violent, freezing cold storms.
The expedition – and your VR experience – comes to an end with the breath-taking view from the summit never seen by humans before. Here you are, standing on the top of the world – an altitude of 8,849 metres…and you’re the first.

It’s 29th May 1953. The news reached London on the 2nd June, on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.
