WAVE: Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts Exhibition at Japan House London

Many of the artists are heavily influenced by anime and manga and well-known for their iconic designs and collaborations with the most famous brands.

WAVE: Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts represents a selection of 60 well-known and emerging Japanese artists.

The artworks displayed in the exhibition include elements of pop art, surrealism, and illustration, representing a variety of styles and artistic backgrounds from artists from their early twenties to their late eighties.

Inspired by Anime/Manga

Kageyama Tōru: Sharaku

Among the artworks on display, you’ll find many artists heavily inspired by anime and manga, such as Kageyama Tōru who is best known for his book cover designs in Japan. Besides anime and manga his main influence are European and Chinese landscapes, as well as 18^th century Japan’s ukiyo-e woodblock print tradition.

Hayakawa Motohiro: X Planet Battles

Hayakawa Motohiro’s bold and colourful paintings represent vintage sci-fi heroes, aliens and robots in psychedelic, dreamlike landscapes. His illustrations and characters are heavily engaging with comic-style battle scenes.

Terada Katsuya (Untitled)

Terada Katsuya is an anime and manga artist who designed characters for video games, Japanese animated films and series and worked on some of the most famous American comics: Iron Man and Hellboy.

Artist Oki-chu’s unmissable style is called ‘automatism’ and he is known for his elaborated pen and pencil drawings. His primary influences are the world of anime and manga and video games. This influence is tangible in his artworks.

Tanaami Keiichi: Shōnen Tiger 02, Shonen Oja, Shōnen Tiger 01

Visitors have the privilege to see original artworks from Japan’s leading illustrators and commercial illustrators.

Tanaami Keiichi is one of Japan’s leading pop artists. He has worked as a graphic designer since 1960s. He is an illustrator, and video artist, showing his artwork in numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad.

Maki Kahori: Meditative Flower

Maki Kahori is best known for her incredibly detailed flowers and plants motifs. She has collaborated with the biggest brands, such as Apple and Adobe Systems.

Uno Akira is one of Japan’s leading artists and illustrators, best known for his timeless characters and fantasy scenes.

Yamaguchi Harumi is a leading name in Japanese advertising. She is known for her female character, ‘Harumi Gals’. A glamours, strong, confident, and active female figure free from traditional feminine roles.

Hanai Yusuke’s name might be familiar to many of us by his collaboration with Vans. Hanai is influenced by beatnik, hippie and surf culture. In his artworks, he depicts an adventurous, wanderlust lifestyle.

Ichijō Hikaru: Twins

Ichijō Hikaru, influenced by print technology and designs bold images of athletic female figures. She has collaborated with Nike and Calbee.

‘Heta-Uma’ movement (translated as ‘bad but good’) also represents itself at ‘WAVE’. ‘Heta-Uma’ movement emerged in the 1970s thanks to a manga magazine, called GARO. ‘Heta-Uma’ challenges our perspective of what is ‘ugly’ and what is ‘beautiful’. It asks the question: can something that is considered to be ugly, be beautiful at the same time?

‘Heta-Uma’ Cocktail

Orange-infused shōchū, sake, star anise, and blue curaçao are shaken over ice, before being poured into glass filled with ice and lined with grenadine. Next, lichee and yuzu juice added to the blend to form a white cloud in your glass. Finally, the cocktail is garnished with a raspberry soaked in absinthe and set light in front of your eyes.

Mix the cocktail well to see it changes colour from dreamy blue to vivid orange.

Ramen Yokocho is a retro ramen restaurant bringing you retro Tokyo vibes from the 1970s. They offer the best regional ramen bowls from all over Japan from Sapporo through Tokyo to Kumamoto.

Ramen Yokocho have two locations in London:

Heddon Yokocho is tucked away in Heddon Street from the busy Regents Street, offering the perfect hideaway under glowing lanterns and nostalgic neon street signs.

They introduced their manga cocktail menu, ‘Highballs and Cocktails’, last year and it includes 12 different cocktails and 4 mocktails.

From classic to floral to exotic, there are cocktails for all taste. I picked the ‘Manga Kiichigo Sour’. With its pink colour, a cute edible manga sticker, and its sweet floral flavour, it’s definitely a cocktail girls love.

The restaurant is named after a special ward in the heart of Tokyo, called Chūō. It’s a lively ward that seamlessly balances modernization and tradition. Chūō’s business district, Nihonbashi, is filled with skyscrapers and corporate powerhouses, while in other parts of the ward you can find hundreds of years old historical buildings.

This is where the concept of Europe’s first Sushi Monorail restaurant was born.

CHŪŌ is a heaven for sushi lovers. From Sashimi to their signature Dragon Roll to Hosomaki to Nigiri, everyone finds something that suits their taste.

CHŪŌ also serve starters, including Tempura and Gyoza (pork, chicken, prawn and veg) and Yakitori (meat or veg on a skewer) will become available soon.

The sushi plates typically contain 2-7 rolls, depending on your choice. The prices are amazing for the excellent quality sushi.

We ordered three plates: Ikura Gunkan, Dragon Roll, Sashimi Unagi and a drink and paid £19.

Once you’ve ordered, watch your food delivered by a mini Shinkansen train. When you finished with your meal, simply put your empty plates into the plate return slot next to your table. How cool is that!

Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own Exhibition

Step into the home of the legendary frontman of Queen. Thousands of Freddie Mercury’s personal collection are going under the hammer this September, but before the auction fans of the late legend have the chance to get a glimpse of the over 1,400 items in an exhibition for completely free!

Hand-Written Lyrics, Stage Costumes, Personal Items and His Precious Piano

Auction house, Sotheby’s have used each of their 15 galleries to showcase over a thousand items from Freddie Mercury’s personal collection, the iconic musician collected for over 50 years.

The collection is carefully categorised. Each room has a different theme laid out thematically.

Being a fan of Japanese art, Freddie had a vast collection of furniture, kimonos, paintings, graphics, ceramics and even a piano with amazing Japanese illustrations on it. Only his closest friends were allowed to see this precious collection. And now, over 30 years of the legend’s death, fans get the privilege, too.

The ground floor is revolving around Mercury’s personal life. Visitors can wander through his dining room, the lounge, the kitchen, and admire ‘crazy little things’, such as his adorable collection of cat statues, and his favourite games he played at home and when on tours, including a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle.

There are also fan arts and official merchandise related to the Queen’s tours.

Don’t miss Freddie’s signature on a magazine, he gave to one of his fans, named Rita.

There is an entire room dedicated to the Queen’s golden and platinum albums and Mercury’s iconic crown and red velvet cape he wore on the Magic tour in 1986.

On the first floor the exhibition showcases Freddie’s on-stage life by displaying his costumes, hand-written lyrics and sketches, his walk-in dressing room, awards he won and his beloved Yamaha G2 Baby Grand Piano. This is the one he composed numerous Queen hits on, including Bohemian Rhapsody.

Among his on-stage costumes, you can find the iconic black silk velvet jacket worn in the Bohemian Rhapsody promotional video in 1975 as well as a stage-worn red satin silk kimono decorated with fans in the 1976 tour in Tokyo.

You don’t want to miss the famous green door to Mercury’s Garden lodge covered with layers of messages by fans after his death.

There are never-seen-before original hand-written lyrics of the Queen’s greatest songs on display, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions and Don’t Stop Me Now.

There are a lot of other items to marvel at, such as MTV Video Music Award, Brits Award, a huge Wurlitzer jukebox and a bar counter with stools…all going under the hammer in September 2023.

Freddie Mercury loved auctions and he was Sotheby’s regular customer, so “this would be the route he would wanted. He would have found all this a blast.” – said Freddie’s one-time fiancé and long-time friend, Mary Austin about the auction.

Boba Tea London is definitely the cutest bubble tea shop in Chinatown. It has the most adorable plushie wall with giant boba plushies to provide the perfect background for you with your bubble tea.

Right next to the plushie wall, there is an amazing hand-painted mural wall full of adorable characters.

The opposite side of the shop won’t leave you disappointed either. A huge, cute neon panda (the logo of Boba Tea London) surrounded with bubbly pink waves and a row of pink plush sofas make that side super photogenic. Even the lamps on the ceiling look like popping balls.

At Boba Tea London, ordering your bubble tea is completely different than at any other bubble tea shops.

Instead of making your order at the counter, you have to go to the ‘Boba Lab’. Here you can make your very own customised bubble tea by choosing your syrup or powder and topping. To make the whole experience more fun, the syrups come in syringes, the powders in laboratory tubes while the toppings are in petri dishes.

Boba Tea London also serves mouth-watering waffle on STIX for only £5 with one sauce and one topping of your choice. I went for cookies & cream and smarties, and it was so delicious!

The waffle is made to order and served warm and soft.

If you love mochi, you’re in for a treat! They have a selection of chewy mochi and mochi ice cream in the most different flavours.

Make sure you visit Boba Tea London next time when you’re in Chinatown and capture your boba moments in front of the plushie wall and enjoy their delicious desserts.

No 9 Carnaby – The Rolling Stones Opened Their Flagship Store

The Rolling Stones have opened their first flagship store on the iconic Carnaby Street. Yay!

The news was announced on the 20^th August 2020 on all the mayor media from BBC News to The Independent.

RS No. 9 Carnaby

The band’s first shop is on Carnaby Street and the location has been chosen for good reason. “Soho has always encapsulated Rock ‘n’ Roll, so Carnaby Street was the perfect spot for our own store.” – explained The Rolling Stones.

The shop showcases the band’s colours of red and black. In the window there is a soundwave installation taken from the opening of the famous song, ‘Pain It Black’ from 1966.

The shop floor features song lyrics and the fitting rooms are decorated with artworks from The Rolling Stones’ most famous albums.

The shop also introduces the band’s official colour ‘Stones Red’, the official red colour from Pantone that first appeared on The Rolling Stones’ tongue & lips logo and have been used since then over decades.

The Stones Fashion

The shop is jointly curated by The Rolling Stones and Bravado. Bravado is the Universal Music Group’s merchandise and brand management company.

The store sells branded men, women and kids’ fashion and accessories, the band’s latest albums and exclusive merchandise available in store only. The selection of merchandise reflects the six-decade career of The Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones was formed in 1962 in London and one of the most influential and most successful bands of all time with an estimated record sale of 240 million.

The band has released their new album ‘Goats Head Soup’ this September. The album features an all-new stereo mix of the original 1973 album, as well as three never-heard singles: ‘Scarlet’, ‘All the Rage’ and ‘Criss Cross’.

The Grand Opening

The shop’s grand opening was stylishly on 9/9/2020 at well…not 9am but 11am. A moderately long queue had already been formed when I get there to the shop at 8:30am. Half an hour before the opening the staff went around and gave branded face coverings with The Rolling Stones’ logo. They handed out approx. 50 and I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of them.

Shortly after 11am the security started letting fans into the shop. The amount of people was strictly limited due to Covid_19 but to be honest, I didn’t mind. It was way better spending time in the shop without a suffocating crowd. There were no useless arguments over products, and everyone had a chance to take photos, selfies and make videos without being disturbed by the crowd.

The store is really entertaining and immersing. The walls and the floors are decorated with either lyrics or The Rolling Stones’ famous lips & tongue logo. You can take selfies with one of the giant 3D logos or in one of the cool selfie corners.

On the front wall there are giant screens showcasing famous concert footages and animations while the band’s most famous songs are playing.

I was managed to get a limited-edition red vinyl of the band’s new album, Goat Head Soup.

Here it is in all its glory. Hope, one day I could get it signed.

After shopping I headed to see another giant lips & tongue installation under the Carnaby arch. After being polished, the sculpture was ready to become the backdrop of some promo photo shoots with fans.

It will be there for a while, so why not go Rock ‘n’ Roll and take some cool selfie for your Instagram?
